Today I was lucky enough to be invited to the Athenaeum Club's Christmas meeting, which included lunch, preceded by mulled wine and entertainment. The club is very active with a large membership, and actually pre-dates the borough council's ownership of this grade 1 Georgian building.
It was the club that long ago bought it and rescued it from a ruinous state, and which now lives on to enjoy the refurbished building's reading room most Wednesdays. There is also a snooker club with its own room and full sized table.
