Abbeygate is the most central ward in Bury St Edmunds. It is represented by two councillors on St Edmundsbury Borough Council, and two on Bury St Edmunds Town Council. Paul Farmer and his Conservative fellow councillor Richard Rout are both the Town and Borough councillors. Since May 2005 two County Councillors also represent Abbeygate and four other wards, which together make up the new “Tower” county council electoral division.
