Kings Road - now open

I cycled down Kings Road today, after delivering some letters to residents about the application by Ruin nightclub to open until 3am on Thursdays-Saturdays.

What a superb job has been done here, allowing a mix of cars, bicycles and pedestrians to use this area. It is all so much smarter, and with the one way street element made permanent, its quieter. Numbers 3, 4 & 5 Kings Road now have a proper sized pavement outside their houses too. Well done St Eds and SCC for enabling this to happen

What do others think - and what do you think about the Ruin's licensing variation? Incidentally there is only planning permission for the first floor club to open until 2am, so we may expect a new planning application too.

An improvement maybe, BUT a missed oppitunity. SHARED SPACE would have been the answer.

Shareed Space would in my opinion have looked visually cleaner, would have been safer. ( yes there are studies in europe to back that), and based on a single surface with mixed textures cheaper. ( well as long as the firm who are not building the cycle way in the south are not involved).

All we lacked was vision, an open mind, and paid officials willing to look out, learn and experience, oh sorry its my home town Bury St Edmunds.

Regarding Ruin we could learn from small towns in europe here too.

Ruin by name, ruin by nature I say

BB - Not sure what would have to change to make this completely shared space, especially given it is a main route out of town. Also not sure what we could learn re Ruin.

Anon - !

PM - My number of visitors to the site has rocketed. All these votes are new ones.

I think Ruin should have later opening hours everywhere else in town has 3am close, This is what Bury needs to keep people in the town, it will create more atmosphere, more jobs and somewhere for the people of Bury St Edmunds to go. Personally I cant wait for it to open.

With the amount of businesses in Bury St Edmunds closing and the lack of new businesses opening one would of thought that loyal members of the public would be just a little more objecive?! (New business opening in Bury St Edmunds, More jobs, More choice and more money being spent in the neighboring businesses) As a loyal member of the Bury St Edmunds public (by this I mean I actually live in Bury St Edmunds) I see these previously unmentioned points as positives. So much time is being spent on trying to take these positives away from the people of Bury St Edmunds and the town itself, that it is difficult to believe that the instigator of all this negativity and gossip really is not being objective and is neglecting far more important issues.

By "more atmosphere" you presumably mean more vomit, noise, litter and rowdy behaviour for the poor people who live in Kings Road!

I have to hand it to the owners of Ruin, who have gathered their troops together very succcessfully in my poll.

dosn't bury st edmunds have enough places for the binge drinkers to go to why not just give them an 11 pm licence

No, I have nothing to do with Ruin first off! Or, for that fact the licensed trade anymore.
Very simply though, yes it should open til 3! Why the bloody hell wont you lot of idiots get off the back of the people who run bars & clubs in this town!!! The night time economy of this town is as important as the day for the towns survival & YOUR housevalues for the future!
You know what, you really ought to realise what a fantastic set of publicans & security teams you have here & how well it is policed. Believe me, having worked in the trade all over this country & abroad for over 20 yrs I think I know what I'm talking about! The problem with binge drinking etc & antisocial behaviour is a social statement of Great Britain today not the Bars, Pubs & Clubs in this town. For crying out loud its 2008! If you can't handle the effects of living in the TOWN CENTRE - P**## off somewhere in the country & tend to the roses. Normally I'd be far more eliquent in my comments but it gets nowhere!
Maybe the council rather than bitching should employ an industry expert to see how bad it really is as opposed the thoughts & ideas of all the armchair experts.

As there is already a club with late opening hours in the area in which Ruin is planning to open, is it not sensible to keep this as the primary area for late opening? I am unsure how much more disturbance would be caused in this area by an extra club, but I would not expect it to increase greatly - noise checks do take place for this. No doubt I will be corrected if Im wrong, but I would presume it is better for those out late at night to be inside a venue than wandering the streets? And a later opening decreases the likelihood of a large body of people leaving at once, but makes them more likely to leave in small groups as their night comes to an end at different times to others. I think that, along with the pros of living in the centre of town, there will always be cons, and late night noise is one of these that should be expected by residents. (I don't mean to cause offence!)

Re. Kings Road - I think it is much better and safer to have wider pavements and single file traffic. I would only worry at the effect of dirty tires and skidmarks on the white paving! It looks nice though.

Thank you to the person who today explained to me how multiple computer voting is very easy.

Sadly it throws even more doubt on my polls.

Anonymous said...

I don't know how multile computer voting works or what it is exactly but I do know that it seems the people being positive strongly over shadow all the people being negative. (no surprise there then) Poll or no poll everyone can see that. If the poll by some mishap would have swung in the opposite direction I don't think the poll would have been deemed "Sad and doubtful?" But the longer the discussion goes on the more hits the website gets so it would be expected that any chance to provoke more disputing will be taken.

Charlotte Howard said...

Well here is what I have been reliably told:

"It is easy to multiple vote. Your voting pattern, regarding Ruin, would suggest it is just one or two people who are actually doing the majority of the voting. This process is quite easy providing you have a dynamic IP address. This is the common system for most households where your Internet Service Provider, such as BT, TalkTalk will give you a different IP address every time you connect to the internet. This differs from having a static IP address, mainly work based connections, where your IP address always stays the same. Having a different IP address will suggest to your voting system that you are a different computer every time you visit your web page and give you a new vote."

Well wa'd'ya you know!

Ah I see! I thought that for the no's to go from 17 to over a 100 was questionable (thank you for pointing out that this is probably the reason why). Poll or no poll I think Bury knows what it wants and is looking forward to what it is getting. It doesn't really matter which button people click on this poll as long that they are showing interest and talking about bars, pubs and clubs in Bury St Edmunds. After all it is, like all the other licensed premises in Bury, going ahead due to the MAJORITY of the councillors and the councils various departments supporting a new business opening.

I must say reading through all of these comments that I think it is wrong of you all to think that there is just one person voting for it all! If that is that case you must have one very dedicated person pulling in all the "no" votes. Personally I cant wait for the Ruin to open finally Bury will have a decent place to go in the evening. And I agree should the late licensing hours not all be in the one area and not spread out all over the place!!!

Charlotte Howard said...

Thank you for sending this to me three times Anon! Are you trying to tell me something?

I notice that all except PM, BB and me have hidden behind the cloak of anonymity, so I shall take all the above with a pinch of salt. I think however I shall have to stop polls, once these two have finished, which is a shame.

No more anonymous comments on this particular story will be published - sorry.

Hi i personally know the owners of ruin , the last thing they want is to upset the residents ,they want to work alongside the police to make this a pleasent pub and club to visit.so cut them some slack and grant them the late licence that all the other pubs and clubs have.

Anonymous said...

I dont think people will really be that bothered about multiple voting as if you look on the facebook group for the ruin it has nearly 500 members already who are supporting the new club and bar! So this means as it stands not even half of the people have voted so fixed voting shouldnt really come in to it if you look at the figures! Also I cant see how much more of a nuisance it is going to cause with de ja vu opposite who attract a younger crowd and doesnt attract the same sort of crowd? Anyway ill leave it for some one else to comment but im all in favour for The Ruin!

OOOHHHHHHHHHHH i'M SCARED!!

No more anonymous comments on THIS particular story will be published... You have made a mockery of your own website. All polls except this one fine, all comments that go your way are fine and when it is not fine this happens. The real agenda is now clearer than ever, how sad though. You have enabled anoymous comments but now it doesn't suit so lets bend the rules. Guess it's lucky any positive points were published at all! Well don't worry it will return to a low hit unused website once again very soon. But by all means if you do need more visitors then start more gossip about something and yipeee once again people will hear your name for a couple of weeks, then forget again.

p.s.take pleasure in not publishing this and feeling high and mighty, or how ever someone feels when they start lying to themselves about being fair or doing the right thing.

Someone's a bad loser!

Charlotte Howard said...

Well you can see I relented on the anonymous comments, but I still don't think they serve much of a purpose now, whatever their view.

By the way, there are a lot of assumptions being made here. I never expressed any view about Ruin, but just asked for others.

Anonymous said...

to be fair your visitor counts have gone up by 35 since the last time i checked and the no votes have goneup by over 100... some people not like losing hey?

Anonymous said...

I think that it is fair to say that even if the owners have been 'gathering their troops' people have their own mind and will not vote if they don't want to. I'm all for the club, I think it deserves as much of a chance as any other club in town, and surely it will bring people to Bury rather than taking them going to Ipswich or Norwich. People want Bury to survive as a town, but don't want change. Good Luck Ruin!!!!
Plus if you think the vote system is a sham, why include it on the site...worried about losing?

Charlotte Howard said...

This is getting silly. No doubt the plea to supporters on Facebook is working. Where are the no votes coming from? No doubt some serial opposers.

Ellie, I included the poll before I realised the potential for abuse - on both sides. I am not trying to 'win' or 'lose' but was simply trying to guage opinion.

I repeat that I did not state my own view, and also that this establishement has already got planning and licensing permission to open.

Anonymous said...

"I have to hand it to the owners of Ruin, who have gathered their troops together very succcessfully in my poll." surely this is a negative tone towards 'yes' voters therefore positioning yourself in the 'no' camp.
