The Abbeygate LibDem Leaflet

I have just cycled furiously to my remote PC to put right the statements I have just read. They are either uninformed, mistaken or intentionally misleading. Take your choice. Here is the truth, under their own headlines: Housing Crisis Are the LDs against 500 new houses a year in St Edmundsbury (NOT '10K in Bury St Edmunds')? Don't they know Conservatives have created about 500 affordable houses by finding £16M for this since 2003? Campaign Against Global Warming Exactly how will 'capital spending go on reducing carbon emissions in Bury St Edmunds'? Don't they know that the Conservatives' two big building programmes (Cattle Market venue and PSV) are very environmentally friendly? How Your Money is Spent Where do they get these figures from? Haven't they consulted our budget book? The venue was never going to cost £6M but £16M (a printing error both times?). Nor is it now costing us £20M but more like half that amount. Their PSV figures are equally wrong The building will not cost us £20M but more like £7.4M and the savings to us (amazingly quoted almost correctly) will allow breaking even in about 7 years not '63'. Local residents reject Cattle Market design - well, why not say only 5.8% of them did. Our Middle Schools were proposed to be 'scrapped' by LibDem Cllr Julia Truelove when the all party Policy Development group proposed the school review - not just a 'Tory proposal'. The Manor House Museum's situation has nothing to do with a World Heritage bid, because one has not been made. Don't they know that? The Town Council was not rejected by '4 to 1' in the parish poll but by 257 to 101 out of a possible 27,937 electors. Residents denied double glazing LD's seem not to understand about conservation. Don't they know that this policy only applies to a minority of homes in St Edmundsbury conservation areas? Don't they know that it has applied for many, many years? Don't they know that approximately 500,000 people use the cinema each year? Are they against that? Rule from Ipswich shows a complete misunderstanding of the pathfinder status. Perhaps if both the existing LibDem Borough Councillors had attended all the meetings held about this they would have a better understanding of the project.

Paul - Seeing David Chappel and his candidate on Thursday I said all of what you have put in your blog to his face. He then walked off. I saw him again about an hour later and he all but ran away from me! The leaflet is full of inaccuracies, and damn lies as far as I am concerned. Unfortunately, people beleive it!

Forgive my ignorance, but why do you have to cycle to a remote PC? How remote is it? Is it a field or something? I'm confused!

Of the 42 county councillors who voted to scrap middle schools, 41 were Conservatives.

The voting ratio at the parish poll was 2.5 to 1 not 4 to 1. With a clear choice between the Abolitionists and the Loyalists in most wards on 03 May, the voice of the people will soon be heard.

Come on Paul. Take a chill pill. Life ain't that bad. You've secured yourself loads of votes from this blog alone.

To anon 2 (AKA DN) - No one voted to scrap middle schools, they voted to improve the education of the children of Suffolk (see my ‘blog’ for more info). I find it strange that Labour and the Lib Dems are now using it as a political weapon at election time when their members were part of the cross party Policy Development Panel who recommended that Suffolk goes Two-Tier in the first place! When it came to the vote, it all went political and all the Labour and Lib Dems, except Cllr. Julia Truelove voted against their own recommendations! Talk about hypocritical! Some politicians have no scruples. Others just jump on the band wagon.

I have always wanted to be a Councillor. Could you please tell me what qualifications I need? I see from your website that you have lots of qualifications. I have 'A' levels but I don't have a degree. Does this matter?

People are always running away from Paul Hopfensperger. I wonder why? Perhaps it's because he can't spell their names. There are two'll's' in Chappell.

Paul has some way to go to catch Mark Bergdahl; who claims that the Manor House was sold for the poultry sum of £1.2m. You can buy a lot of chicken wings with that sort of money!
