Former car park shown from Risbygate Street
Last Thursday Havebury Housing revealed their plans for a block of 27 one and two bedroomed flats, to be built on this now boarded off site on the edge of but within the Town Centre Conservation area. The drop-in consultation held at The Apex attracted folk from Nelson Road, who were among those residents closest to the arc construction and endured the notorious huts right behind them - as also shown above.
The provision of affordable housing in this area will in itself be welcome news for those who need it, and this site is long overdue for development. However, there is a balance to be struck; and the planning authority should not just accept anything for the sake of increased accommodation. The fact that there is no parking provision planned for residents or visitors will be one of the aspects that will no doubt be addressed when the application goes out for formal consultation.
As ever - watch this space.
